Genre - This film is obviously in the genre of a drama - this is shown through the use of the low-key lighting (fog) as well as the the non-diegetic narrator over the top of the film thats telling the story. Similarly, the contrast of the low light level which connotes sadness and the down-beat non-diegetic music that is being played over the top of the film, compared to the use of the beachm which is usually used to represent happiness and summer makes that audience believe this is even more of a drama - there is a mixture of emotions in the film already. Frthermore, the voice-over is all in past-tense which makes that audience feel that this event has already happened and that film could be biographical / historical.Editing - The editing used in this clip is very slow paced. Although there are a lot of shots used, each shot has a lot of screen time and they do not cut between the shot particularly quickly, compared to another genre such as an action. This created the idea of the film being down-beat and therefore sad / dramatic - the editing contributes this idea.
Sound - The sound in this film is 100% non-diegetic; the voice-over and the down-beat music. The use of this sad type of sound creates tension and drama which makes the viewer think about what is happening and want to watch more. Similarly, the fact that there is a use of a voice over, instead of someone talking, creates a mystery / an enigma as the speaker might not be any of the characters on screen. This adds to the drama and makes viewers want to watch the rest of the film.
Character / Narrative - We are told very little about narrative or characters throughout the entire film opening; the only information we are given is from the speaker about a character named 'Katie. However, over that this we are not met with any other character and we are unsure whether the characters on the screen are 'Katie' and the speaker or other characters. This leaves us with a mystery and makes the viewer want to find out more - it also adds to the drama of the piece.
Titles - In terms of titles, other than he characters names, we are not met with many titles for this film. There is no clear film name for the opening, or clear which characters play who or whom the director is. The only titles that are clear are the production companies at the very beginning - this is something that could be improved about the opening and is something I can use to improve my own film opening as and when I make one.
